Arriving almost an hour late from the airport did not phase the legend DJ Kentaro. As soon as we saw him reach for some vinyl with tape laid across it we knew we were in for a real treat! Playing his 2001 DMC routine and an unknown set, sit back and watch the master in action.
Kentaro Okamoto – aka DJ Kentaro – is a turntablist and sound creator from Japan. Having started spinning vinyl at the age of 13, he went on to become the first Asian to win the DMC World Championship title in 2002 at the age of 20, receiving the first ever perfect score in DMC history.
After releasing his ‘On the Wheels of Solid Steel’ mix CD, including tracks from Ninja Tune, he signed to the label in 2006, releasing his first full-length album of entirely original material, ‘Enter’, in early 2007.
As well as releasing his own songwriting creations, DJ Kentaro has gone on to work with a wide range of artists, musicians and singers, working on productions, exclusive remixes and collaborations for people such as Foreign Beggars, DJ Krush and C2C to name a few.
BASSCAMP is a biannual festival that Kentaro both organises and directs.
