Arriving almost an hour late from the airport did not phase the legend DJ Kentaro. As soon as we saw him reach for some vinyl with tape laid across it we knew we were in for a real treat! Playing his 2001 DMC routine and an unknown set, sit back and watch the master in action.
Ninja Tune is an independent record label based in London, England. Established in 1990 by Matt Black and Jonathan More – otherwise known as electronic pioneers, Coldcut – the label was started as a way for the duo to give exposure to more experimental musicians, and to allow them the creative freedom often disallowed by major labels.
Coldcut’s spirit of innovation – using samples taken from the worlds of hip-hop, jazz, spoken word and mainstream pop – and this strong focus on the experimental as the label’s driving force inevitably led to an impressive eclecticism and a stable of wildly diverse artists: The Cinematic Orchestra, Amon Tobin, Roots Manuva, Dorian Concept and Jagga Jazzist to name a few.
Ninja Tune have gone on to distribute and encompass a number of other electronic labels, including Big Dada, Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder, and Werkdiscs; labels that all reflect Ninja Tune’s original ethos and belief in the importance of uncompromising, progressive, independent electronic music.
